What Are St. Cuthbert’s Beads?
St. Cuthbert’s beads, also known as Cuddy beads, are ancient fossil segments from marine creatures called crinoids. Their star-shaped patterns and circular or pentagonal forms have washed up on Holy Island’s shores for centuries. Rooted in local folklore and tied to the island’s patron saint, these fossils were traditionally kept as protective charms or threaded into jewellery.
Today, they remain treasured symbols of coastal heritage, geology, and the timeless beauty of the natural world.
The star studs are 5mm in diameter and the pentagonal ones, 6mm.
