Silver star crinoid fossil earrings
Silver Star Crinoid Fossil Earrings Handmade with Fine Silver Clay & Textured Sparkling Silver Rings
These handcrafted earrings combine modern sparkle with ancient coastal heritage. At the top sits a hand-textured sparkling silver ring, catching the light with subtle glimmers and finished with secure stud fastenings for comfortable everyday wear.
Suspended from each ring is a beautifully detailed silver star crinoid fossil charm, created using fine silver clay and a reverse imprint technique so the star rises outward in relief rather than forming a recessed hole. This gives the fossil star a striking, sculptural presence.
The fossil impressions come from the imprint of a real Cuddy bead (St. Cuthbert’s bead) discovered by the maker near Holy Island (Lindisfarne). This preserves the genuine form and character of the original ancient fossil while transforming it into wearable art.
What Are St. Cuthbert’s Beads?
St. Cuthbert’s beads, also known as Cuddy beads, are naturally occurring fossilised segments from ancient sea creatures called crinoids (sometimes nicknamed “sea lilies”). These fossils are especially associated with Holy Island, where for centuries locals found their distinctive circular pieces scattered along the shoreline (and still do!)
Their central star or flower patterns made them popular as charms and beads, and folklore links them to St. Cuthbert, the island’s beloved 7th-century saint. Traditionally believed to offer protection and good fortune, they remain treasured symbols of coastal heritage and natural history.
The sparkly rings have a diameter of 10mm and the silver fossils are 7.5mm wide. The overall drop from the stud is 21mm.
