Silver star crinoid fossil earrings
Silver Double Crinoid Fossil Earrings
Delicate, detailed, and full of coastal history, these handcrafted earrings feature two sizes of silver crinoid fossil charms, each capturing the natural beauty of ancient sea life.
At the top sits a petite 5mm round silver fossil stud, showcasing a tiny, perfectly formed star at its centre. These studs fasten securely and comfortably, making them ideal for everyday wear.
Suspended below is a slightly larger 8mm silver crinoid fossil charm, created from fine silver clay using a mould taken directly from a real St. Cuthbert’s bead found by the maker on Holy Island (Lindisfarne). This larger charm features a distinctive star-shaped hole at its centre, an iconic characteristic of these unique fossils.
Once shaped and fired, the clay becomes solid .999 fine silver, preserving every natural ridge and marking. The pairing of the tiny star above and the star-shaped opening below creates a beautifully balanced, elegant design rooted in ancient geology.
Lightweight, meaningful, and timeless, these earrings celebrate the quiet magic of the North Sea coast.
What Are St. Cuthbert’s Beads?
St. Cuthbert’s beads, often called Cuddy beads, are naturally occurring fossilised segments from long-extinct marine creatures known as crinoids. These fossils are famously associated with Holy Island, where locals have collected them for centuries.
Folklore connects them to St. Cuthbert, the island’s beloved saint, and they were traditionally believed to bring protection and good fortune.
The top fossil is 5mm and the lower one, 8mm. The overall drop from the stud is 16mm.
